If you haven’t tried this mouthwatering Maharashtrian sweet yet, you’re in for a treat. Puran Poli is a traditional delicacy that is typically enjoyed during festivals and special occasions. The combination of sweet lentil filling and a soft, thin bread makes this dish truly irresistible.

So, let’s dive into the recipe and learn how to make Puran Poli in the comfort of your own kitchen!

Before we get started, let’s gather the ingredients for making Puran Poli:

  • 1 cup chana dal (Bengal gram lentils)
  • 1 cup jaggery (or sugar)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • Ghee (clarified butter) for cooking
  • Water as required

Now that we have our ingredients ready, let’s start preparing our Puran Poli:

Step 1: Cooking the Lentils

In a pressure cooker, add the chana dal along with 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Cook it for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils are soft and well-cooked. Once done, strain any excess water and set it aside.

Step 2: Preparing the Sweet Filling

In a pan, heat jaggery (or sugar) with a little water until it melts and forms a syrup-like consistency. Add the cooked chana dal to the syrup and mix well. Cook the mixture on low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring continuously. Add cardamom powder for a delightful aroma. Once the mixture thickens, turn off the heat and let it cool.

Step 3: Making the Dough

In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, turmeric powder, a pinch of salt, and water. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.

Step 4: Assembling and Cooking

Divide the dough into small balls and the sweet filling into slightly larger balls. Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it using your hands or a rolling pin. Place a portion of the sweet filling in the center and bring the edges of the dough together to seal it. Gently flatten the filled dough and roll it out into a circle using a rolling pin.

Heat a tawa (griddle) and cook the Puran Poli on both sides using ghee until it turns golden brown. Repeat this process for the remaining dough and filling.

Congratulations! You have successfully made the delicious Puran Poli. Serve it warm with a dollop of ghee or enjoy it as it is. This sweet treat is sure to impress your family and friends on any occasion. So, go ahead and give it a try in your own kitchen!
